Reading Time: 10 Minutes
I am grateful to God for this opportunity to interview the very gifted and talented licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, Dr. Saaudiah Muhammad. In this candid and enlightening interview she discussed with me how with her Better Self Journal Series (BJS) she wants Black women to recognize that they are valuable and that living in a world that seeks to diminish a woman's worth she wants Black women to focus on finding inner peace and value within themselves.
Dr. Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?
Dr. Saaudiah Muhammad: I’m a licensed clinical social worker and a psychotherapist. I recently completed my doctorate in social work. I am passionate about improving the mental health and well-being of my community. I love cooking, reading, and engaging in holistic health.
Dr. Nadine Muhammad: Congratulations on completing your doctorate degree. That is so amazing! What is your motivation for creating The Better Self Journal Series?

Dr. Saaudiah Muhammad: I was motivated to create the Better Self Journal (BSJ) series (currently 2 books published) through my work as a psychotherapist. A common theme that I have seen over the years as a therapist is struggles with self-esteem and self-perception due to various factors. I wanted to create a journal that would motivate and encourage women, particularly Black women, to engage with positive affirmations, support themselves, and offer representation across various facets. The BSJ helps Black women become more inspired.
Dr. Nadine Muhammad: Would you tell us the details of what your journals are about?

Dr. Saaudiah Muhammad: This journal wants Black women to feel seen and heard. The images were intentionally crafted to ensure representation. It was also designed so that users of the journal will not only be encouraged by various affirmations but it also offers tips and recommendations to support physical and emotional well-being.

Dr. Nadine Muhammad: What are the benefits that readers will obtain from using your journals, and how will their lives be transformed?
Dr. Saaudiah Muhammad: As mentioned, the BSJ was designed to motivate and encourage Black women. From the cover images featuring an illustrated dark-skinned woman to encouraging self-love and setting boundaries, this journal series aims to help Black women recognize that we are valuable. We live in a world that seeks to diminish our worth, and I want us to focus on finding inner peace and self-value. This does not mean we do not seek to improve ourselves, but one can improve oneself without self-deprecating language or actions. This journal series is entitled The Better Self Journal, as I want us all to work towards experiencing a ‘better’ self.
Dr. Nadine Muhammad: Thanks so much, Dr. Saaudiah, for all that you are doing as a psychotherapist and for helping our women to love themselves through your journal series. To our readers, we invite you to comment below with any questions you may have about Dr. Saaudiah's journals.
