Reading Time: 5 Minutes

This week I was blessed with the opportunity to interview the owner of Sumayyah's Bakery, Brittany Muhammad. She shared with me her very inspiring story behind the creation of the bakery. In the interview, Brittany talked about how 90% of Sumayyah’s Bakery ingredients come from Muhammad’s Farm!

Nadine Muhammad:  Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?

Brittany Muhammad: As-Salaam Alaikum, family.  My name is Brittany Muhammad. I’m 31 years old.  I’ve been blessed to be married to Brother Omari Muhammad for 4 years. We have a 2-year old daughter named Sumayyah. I’m currently a stay- at-home mom. I’m a 2nd-degree black belt in V.S.K. Jujitsu that’s actively teaching online. I’m an Author; my book is called “Traveling with the Master.” I have my own business called Sumayyah’s Bakery and I’m currently about to graduate from culinary school in October.

Brittany Muhammad: My husband surprised me with a bread machine on my birthday. And the first loaf I ever made tasted better than anything I brought from the store. Warm, fresh, and comforting in every bite. That one loaf of bread sparked curiosity in me. I started wondering what else I could make from scratch. I quickly went from baking loaves of bread to experimenting with cookies, cakes, pies, and eventually pastries. Before I knew it, I wasn't just baking for my family; I was baking to learn, to explore, and to express creativity I didn't even know I had, and even to this day I'm still learning. I even took it to my social media pages and showed them all month long different things that I was practicing baking.

Then Sumayyah came along, and long story short, our first baby passed away. May Allah bless her soul. My dad was telling us to put some money aside for our first baby, but she passed away before any of that could happen. So when Sumayyah came along, I started taking baking even more seriously and decided to name it after her as a discipline to keep me inspired to help her to never have to worry about money and finally be able to apply what my dad said to do, so all proceeds go towards her education and her business endeavors, and as she gets older, we will teach her how to start a business, and it will be all hers. We will also be celebrating our 1-year anniversary for Sumayyah’s Bakery in October. I also went to culinary school so that it could help enhance my skills and to learn different techniques because I felt like I needed a ton more of work with the basics.
