I am grateful for the opportunity to interview Calvin 3X! I learned about the divine inspiration, history, and mission that led to the creation of Your Worm Castings and Black Gold Brew. Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?
Calvin 3X: As-Salaam Alaikum family! My name is Brother Calvin 3X from Muhammad Mosque number 45 in Houston TX. I moved to Houston from Fort Worth TX in 2023, and by Allah’s (God's) grace I received my “X” in August of 2024.
I’ve always had a passion for entrepreneurship and a desire to help others bring their business ideas to life. Over the years, I’ve developed multiple ventures, but what drives me most is empowering others to become self-sufficient — to take control of their resources, their creativity, and their future.
That passion is what eventually led me to Your Worm Castings and Black Gold Brew — combining the power of business, agriculture, and community development into something that truly gives life back to our people.

Nadine Muhammad: Share with us the story behind Your Worm Castings: the inspiration for starting ,history, mission, and purpose.
The Inspiration Behind the Work
Calvin 3X: Honestly, I didn’t set out to start a worm casting or fertilizer business at first. It began unexpectedly while helping a brother from our mosque, Brother David, who owns farmland in Sweeny, Texas. That was one of my first experiences ever being on a farm.
He had sheep, cattle, chickens, and horses—but no crops were being cultivated at the time. As I looked out over the land, I started imagining what could be: where I’d plant fruit trees, where the vegetables and herbs would go, how I’d design it all. Being surrounded by that much open space and potential really sparked my creativity and desire to build.
On the way to the feed store, I shared my ideas with Brother David, and he mentioned a brother named Will Allen, whom the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan encouraged us to study. Will Allen, a retired basketball player and co-founder of Growing Power in Wisconsin, was known for his incredible accomplishments. He was producing massive amounts of food on a small amount of land while also teaching youth the power of urban agriculture.
What stuck with me was something he said: “It all starts with the soil.” That truth resonated deeply. Healthy soil produces healthy food, which leads to healthy children, healthy families and strong communities. I learned that one of the keys to his success was vermicomposting — the use of worms to create nutrient-rich soil known as worm castings.
After learning about Will Allen, I immediately began researching how to start small. With less than $100, a few five-gallon buckets, some cardboard, and worms that I ordered online — I built my first worm farms right there on the land. Within weeks, the worms began producing castings, and I learned how to process them into a liquid fertilizer that was full of nutrients and life.
With a very helpful donation from Brother Zaire (owner of Tha Family Froot on Instagram), I repurposed some wood pallets into raised beds. I then filled them up with dirt from the land, mixed in our liquid fertilizer, and began planting some navy bean seeds given to me by Brother Aleem Ansari Muhammad. Within a week, those seeds sprouted strong and healthy.
Encouraged by those results, I began bottling the fertilizer and sharing it with the believers. The response was overwhelming:
• One sister shared how her tomatoes grew larger and sweeter.
• Her husband, Brother Abdul Qiyam Muhammad, said his okra plants were producing abundantly.
• Dr. Abdul Haleem Muhammad, our regional minister, said his basil and cucumbers were growing like crazy.
• And Sister Latanya, who has many houseplants, said she noticed visible new growth the very next day after using it.

Every time I saw new growth or heard of the outstanding results that our product was producing reminded me that this work isn’t just about plants — it’s about the revival of our people.
