Eliminating Food Insecurity- The Staple Goods Project
The American farmer is in crisis due to the Trump Administration’s policies. President Trump began his second term with a series of executive orders and the implementation of tariffs. These tariffs have had an unexpected consequence of initiating a trade war with foreign nations such as China. The tariffs are a tax levied against imported goods, which is passed down to the consumer, resulting in higher retail prices. (Siriopoulos et al., 2025) This trade war has caused China to abandon U.S. exports of staple crops such as corn and soybeans. Now China imports those crops from nations such as Brazil. This has had a devastating effect on the American farmers. (Dhoubhadel et al., 2025) Another policy of the Trump Administration that affects farmers is the cuts in farm subsidies such as the SNAP program. Coupled with the economic pressures of inflation, federal layoffs, and rising unemployment, the American farmer is in peril. Lastly, the Trump Administration's immigration policy has led to the mass deportation of migrant workers who American farmers depend on. (Chohn, 2025)
The Nation of Islam Ministry of Agriculture offers a solution to the Black farmer and those consumers in underserved and marginalized communities. The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam repurchased Muhammad Farms, a 1,600-acre farm located in Georgia, in 1995. This farm produces crops that address those unmet needs of low-income communities across the nation. Under the leadership of Student Minister Dr. Ridgely Muhammad, Muhammad Farms has been feeding communities for over 30 years.
Their farm products are distributed through the Staple Goods Project, which is a Farm Co-op that offers staple goods and other products such as Whole Wheat Flour, Navy Beans, Rice, Spices, Honey, Sugar, etc. Nationwide distribution is achieved through farm coordinators who are located in cities and towns throughout the county where the farm products are delivered for local distribution.
