Interview with Teacher and Author, Amber Addison-Scott

In my interview with teacher and author, Amber Addison-Scott, she shares with me the story behind her children's book, Learn with me! First and Second Grade Leaning and Activity book.
Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?
Amber Addison-Scott: As a self-published author, I have dedicated my life to teaching and writing. I'm proud to have written and self-published over 12 books across multiple genres, and I'm a three-time participant in the National Black Book Festival. I've also founded Books By Amber and the Central Texas Black Authors Gala.
My educational background includes two Associate's Degrees from Austin Community College in General Studies and Teaching. I'm also a December 2019 Legacy Graduate of Huston-Tillotson University, where I received my BA in English--Writing Arts and am set to graduate again in May with my Master of Education in Language and Literacy. Recently, I completed my Texas Reading Academies Certification and am pursuing my Teaching Certification.
In addition to writing, I've served as a Kindergarten Teacher at Texas Empowerment Academy and currently as a fourth-grade teacher with AISD. To me, my most important job is being a mother to two vibrant toddlers who happen to be autistic. I also value serving my community. Through Books By Amber, I have hosted various events such as a Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Dance, a Back to School Block Party, and a Back to School Backpack Giveaway. I have also organized monthly Community Outreach Excursions to feed the homeless population in my community, and on April 6th, I will be hosting an Autism Awareness and Celebration Event.
Moreover, I have worked to create a community voice for fellow authors and book lovers by hosting events such as a Sip and Read, a Books and Bars, and a Books and Brunch. I hope to continue teaching, writing, serving my community and making a positive impact on those around me.
Amber Addison-Scott: As an educator at heart, I strongly believe that education begins at home. When my children were not yet enrolled in school, my mother and I homeschooled them. There came a time when I was laid off from my teaching job due to budget cuts. During this period, I took the opportunity to supplement my children's education at home and tutor other students. I needed a curriculum for the children to work from, so I created one myself.
Nadine Muhammad: Would you tell us what your book is about?
Amber Addison-Scott: The "Learn With Me" Workbook series was initiated with a Pre-K/Kinder edition, which I developed for my daughter and the student I was tutoring. Inspired by the positive response, I went on to create a Workbook for First and Second Grade Students, specifically for my son to utilize.
