In my interview with Fatimah A. Muhammad, author and founder of At My Sister’s House Publishing, she shares with me the story behind her latest publication series which include a collection of adult coloring books designed to uplift and empower Black women. Fatimah discusses how these books are more than just coloring books—they’re journeys of self-discovery and affirmation, created to inspire and encourage positive thinking in Black Women.

Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?

Fatimah Muhammad: Absolutely! My name is Fatimah Akila Muhammad, and I’m the founder of At My Sister’s House Publishing. I am passionate about creating publications that empower and uplift Black women through books, journals, and other forms of creativity. With a background in community programs and mentorship, I’ve always been driven by a desire to inspire women and help them embrace their unique beauty and value. This passion has led me to create a series of adult coloring books that combine art with powerful affirmations, designed specifically to resonate with the experiences and identities of Black women. While inspiring and reminding the Black woman of her true worth.

Nadine Muhammad: What is your motivation for writing/developing your coloring books for women?

Fatimah Muhammad: My motivation for developing these coloring books stems from a deep desire to provide Black women with tools that encourage self-love, empowerment, and relaxation. In a world where Black women often face unique challenges, I wanted to create something that not only celebrates our beauty and resilience but also offers a therapeutic and creative outlet. Coloring is such a simple yet powerful way to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with oneself. Through this series, I aim to foster a sense of pride, confidence, and inner peace among Black women, encouraging them to embrace their individuality and creativity.

Nadine Muhammad: Would you tell us what your coloring books are about?

Fatimah Muhammad:  Certainly! My book series, "Queens of Color: Empowerment Thru Art & Affirmation," is a collection of adult coloring books designed to uplift and empower Black women. The first two books in the series, "Melanin Masterpiece: Self-Love Journey for Black Women" and "Color Your Confidence: A Coloring Book of Self-Positivity," feature intricate illustrations that celebrate the diverse experiences of Black womanhood. Each page is paired with a powerful "I AM" affirmation, serving as a daily reminder of our strength, beauty, and resilience. These books are more than just coloring books—they’re journeys of self-discovery and affirmation, created to inspire and encourage positive thinking.

Nadine Muhammad: What are the benefits that readers will obtain from reading and coloring your books, and how will their lives be transformed?

Fatimah Muhammad: Readers will find that these coloring books offer a unique blend of relaxation, creativity, and positivity. By engaging in the act of coloring, they can experience reduced stress and anxiety, while the affirmations help to reinforce positive self-image and self-worth. Each page encourages mindfulness, allowing readers to focus on the present moment and embrace a sense of calm and peace.
