Interview with the Founder of Powder Power, Kalimah Muhammad

In this inspirational interview with innovator Kalimah Muhammad, the founder of Powder Power, she tells me the story behind the creation of her online business.
Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?
Kalimah Muhammad: One of the hardest prompts I receive is about who I am, haha. My name is Kalimah Muhammad, and I turn eighteen years old in June! I attend the Academy of Art University virtually, majoring in 2D Animation and Stop Motion. Since I was six years old, I’ve always loved to draw; it makes sense to make a career out of it! In addition to illustrating, I love to read, write, cook, and sew.
Nadine Muhammad: Share with us the story behind your business: the inspiration for starting it, history, mission, and purpose of Powder Power.
Kalimah Muhammad: Powder Power originated when I was nine years old in 2015. My mother approached me at the time and demanded—I mean suggested that since I was now nine, I should start my own business. Originally, I wanted to sell lemonade! That’s a common and plain product, and my mother wanted me to brainstorm a more unique item. There are two key reasons I chose an all-natural body powder: the first one is that I loved making a mess with it! It seems silly but throwing up clouds of white dust amused nine-year-old me! The second reason is because, during the development of Powder Power, I learned that other body powder products (see: Johnson & Johnson) have talcum and asbestos in their ingredients, and both are cancer-causing substances. I created a remedy to this; an all-natural alternative! Powder Power evolved into a solution to the poisonous body products. We aim to replace the world’s body care cabinets with an all-natural, homemade solution.
Nadine Muhammad: Tell us about the products that your business is currently offering to customers.
Kalimah Muhammad: Originally, we created all-natural using holistic ingredients such as tapioca starch, arrowroot powder, and bentonite clay. Our scents consisted of the core three: lavender, jasmine, and vanilla. Nowadays, Powder Power holds a large inventory of products that vary in scent and use. We have scents like Raspberry Breeze, Serenity East, Lavender Zest, Jasmine Vanilla, and many more. In terms of usage, our powders can be used on your bodies, babies, underarms, and feet. We have specialized powders for cleaning your home & cookware and combating pest problems. We even have incense sticks specifically designed and scented to repel all sorts of critters, ranging from roaches to rats!
