Nadine Muhammad: Please, would you tell our readers about yourself?
Abisayo Muhammad: Greetings to all. My name is Abisayo Muhammad, and I am a proud member of the Nation of Islam under the guidance of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Originally born and registered in Chicago, I have now been a resident of Benton Harbor, Michigan, for 20 years. I am grateful to be a mother of seven beautiful children and the wife of Nation of Islam Student Minister and City Mayor, Marcus Muhammad.

I have served in many professional positions, including writing for The Final Call newspaper. It was there that I had the honor and privilege of meeting many greats of our Nation including Mother Tynetta Muhammad who shared many treasures of wisdom that I will take with me forever. One of the things she shared with me was when I left for maternity leave with my first child, she told me to be patient while using our Muslim Training Units to occupy my time and supplement income (paraphrased):). I remained home for many years believing my greatest desire is to discover my gifts and talents and use them to serve my family and my Nation.
Nadine Muhammad: Share with us the story behind your business: the inspiration for starting, history, mission, and purpose of Abisayo's Beautiful Braiding Boutique. Tell us about the products and services that you offer to your customers.

Abisayo Muhammad: Abisayo’s Beautiful Braiding Boutique started as early as a child when my mother paid my sister and me to help her finish braiding her client’s hair when she braided professionally. She trained us both with skill to braid as a way to always keep and trade when needed. Later, as a student of the Teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, along with a Business Marketing Degree, it was time to “do for self.” After giving birth to my first child, I began to take clients on the side as a way to make income from home. Twelve years later, after giving birth to my last child, I decided to take my efforts further and open a professional salon of my own called Abisayo’s Beautiful Braiding Boutique. My mission is to promote healthy, natural hair rooted in African traditional styles, embracing a love of Black hair and showcasing art and fashion.

Love Potion, a moisturizing hair mist originally designed to compliment protective styles such as braids and natural hairstyles, has been on the market for almost 10 years. My clients and supporters instantly loved it for its ability to moisturize dry hair and even promote hair growth. Seven years and two salons later, Abisayo’s Beautiful Braiding Boutique became another lifelong goal fulfilled to go into business for myself with a great future ahead. That is until I received an opportunity to return to school and complete another goal, which was getting a Master’s Degree!

Currently, I am a kindergarten school teacher in the Benton Harbor Area Public School system, but I am always an entrepreneur at heart! I am now transitioning from braiding, but I still offer the products to keep the idea going, and I plan to introduce more hair products in the near future.
