What is a TWIC and How to Obtain One?
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is an identification card issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This ID card is a tamper-resistant biometric credential for maritime workers, truck drivers, construction contractors, personnel access to port facilities, chemical plants, oil refineries and certain manufacturing facilities.
(Wikipedia, 2024).
"TSA published a joint Final Rule with the United States Coast Guard (Coast Guard) to implement a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program to provide a biometric credential that can be used to confirm the identity of workers in the national transportation system. TSA will conduct a security threat assessment and criminal history record check before issuing the credential" (DHS, 2022).
To apply for a TWIC card, you can simply apply online and schedule an appointment at the nearest enrollment center or walk in to an enrollment center and provide the required documentation such as a birth certificate and state driver’s license. The fee for a new TWIC enrollment is $125.50. For more information, visit, https://www.tsa.gov/twic
